The BSS-01 was the only Pong made in GDR and now belongs to the Pongs with the highest enhancement in value. We found speciments that sold for more than 110 Euros, that's around 135 USD! If you consider that these models once cost 550 Ostmark (GDR currency - around 100 USD) what was equal to almost a months income of a GDR employee these BSS-01 consoles now can sell for more than their original price while an average ebay price is about 50-70$.
Due to it's nice looks, the high standard of production and the upcoming "Ostalgia" wave (a german word composition of Ost (east) and Nostalgia) people now generate this increase in demand. Only legendary Pong systems like the Magnavox Odyssey, the Atari C-100 and some ultrarare systems show this increase in value today.
Having 900+ Pong systems in our collection we can say that the BSS-01 is one of the Top 5 Pong systems if you consider durability and handling! Due to it's built in power supply unit no batteries are needed (danger of drainage) and no extra psu unit has to be bought (if you confuse polarity or voltage this could damage the system). So this system can be handled in a very convenient way!
While the BSS-01 often surfaces on ebay.de less is known about it's original box. Many years none of these boxes surfaced, so people started to doubt that there has ever been an illustrated box made for this system.
We now found a torn box that simply consists of a cardboard box with a white illustrated sheet of paper wrapped around. People had to tear off the sheet in order to take out the system. This explains that no illustrated box has been found so far. Besides this white box, a second, completely different box exists: a nice, solid "brown box" that reminds us of a shoe box.
The white box with torn off sheet of paper. Please note price and location of production. Pictures of a complete white box will soon follow!
The nice brown box. Please note the shy slogan "Erhoeht den Gebrauchswert Ihres Fernsehgerätes" ("Increases value of usage on your TV Set") which was typical for a communist affected country. This box seems to be extremely rare - we only found 2-3 in 12 years!
This warranty sheet proves two things: more than the once assumed 500 systems were sold hence it's serial number of 871 and these systems were not only given to schools or other educational facilities hence it's stamp of a store in Maichin GDR.
